The Barneys Club

The Barneys Club is a discussion group, and the oldest society at the University of Bristol. We are first and foremost an academic club that encourages students to develop their critical thinking skills by engaging with new ideas and open debate.

Historically, club meetings or "meets" consisted of a member presenting a topic of interest while other students relax over glasses of port and smoke pipes. The Barneys Club traditionally holds an annual dinner at which a distinguished guest delivers a speech.

The membership was historically limited to twelve students, four per academic year group. It is expected that every member would contribute by leading a discussion on a topic. The modern formulation of the club encourages members to develop their public speaking and informal debating skills. Members of Wills Hall, past and present, are always welcome to attend club meets.
